Storybook: The very hungry caterpillar
Author’s name: Eric Carle
Illustrator’s name: Eric Carle
Date of (original) publication: June 3, 1969

I brought a story entitled "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" published on June 3, 1969, by the author and illustrator Eric Carle. This story is an informational story because it tells the story of a tiny and hungry caterpillar who eats huge quantities of many types of food because he has a vast appetite and after this he has a stomachache. The Very Hungry Caterpillar story is a unique and creative story because it has a clear description and bright pictures with details. This story was written at a low level. Therefore, the content of the story suits the cognitive level of children at this age (4-5) years old. For example, Sunday, Monday.....etc. Also, it consists of simple vocabulary such us caterpillar, slice, salami and cocoon. So children can understand the text easily.
This story can support the teaching and learning of curriculum such as math, Literacy and science.
1- Math: K2MDD1- Sort objects according to common properties.
Prior to starting the STEM activity, I provided them with the difference between the Butterfly and moth through using PowerPoint that was done to manage students to identify and sort the difference between the moth and butterfly. Then I showed them some pictures with Students understood the matter where they answered the questions. Then I asked children a question when we can see the moth. After that all of them answered after discussion and even for the questions, I asked them about the butterfly and they answered.

What did you find especially satisfying about the process or the finished product of the STEAM activity?
-
I faced some difficulties when I tried to find a story and link it with different outcomes for Math and science. I took a week to find the appropriate story and my friend suggests to use the " The Very Hungry Caterpillar" and how can I implement and make STEM activity by use this story. because I want to give students an activity that they can link it to their life experiences. I had the problem to find a magnet for the activity.

-
What did you find frustrating about it?
-
I faced some difficulties when I was searching for STEM activity about
butterfly and moth because I want to give the students an activity that they can link it to their routine. According to Piaget, “Every time we teach a child something, we keep him from inventing it himself. On the other hand, that which we allow him to discover for himself will remain with him visible for the rest of his life". So I researched in the book " STEM Activates, " and I found some ideas that helped me to finish product my STEAM activity. -
What would you change if you had an opportunity to teach this STEAM activity over?
If I had an opportunity to teach this lesson again, I would do STEM activity with all students at the same time, not just with two groups because other two groups came to me a said:" we want to do this activity. I felt sad about that.
